The interface emulates a real-life setup of two turntables and a mixer. Each turntable has pitch, tempo, and direction control. There also are play, stop, and auto-fade controls, and the program comes with virtual outboard gear such as a power amplifier, a graphic equalizer, and a dynamics processor. The free version limits the dynamics processor to compression and gain control, however. Quirky effects such as Surface Noise, Various Scratches, and Needle Noise are interesting. We liked the auto-DJ function, which automatically crossfades between tracks. You can add individual files, CDs, streaming playlists (M3Us), or folders to the playlist. The program supports WAV and MP3 files, as well as its proprietary Ots format. Though this version appears feature-limited compared to the paid versions, OtsTurntables Free is a solid player for both newbies and laptop DJs.

Advanced DVD Player 3.03
Not nearly as advanced as its name would suggest, this freeware DVD player is barely adequate for simple playback. AdvancedDVDPlayer doesn't let you bookmark interesting scenes. It doesn't automatically resume playback from the spot you last stopped watching. Most frustrating, it doesn't let you pause a movie and navigate through it with the time line. The interface mostly consists of the playback window and the MyPlayList and Explore panels, both of which have a rudimentary, amateurish look. AdvancedDVDPlayer scores points for stability and price, but with so many superior DVD players available for free, it's hard to think of a reason to choose this one.

The de facto standard for Windows media playback is Windows Media Player. This version--9--is getting up in age and is best used for older systems. The interface is familiar with a simple menu of commands, a central playback window, and an information bar. Standard audio playback functions are easy to access. The graphic equalizer features 22 preset options, and the usual slider bar will be familiar to 1970s rock fans. The large varieties of visualizations are easy to implement and are sure to amuse those who remember the 1960s. Video playback in any of the included skins is adequate. Controls, for the most part, are easy to access, though some skins stretch the concept of user-friendly. Copying to and copying from CDs works, but don't expect most options available from current players. The Internet radio player searches station listings by genre or location. Despite the lack of newer features, users with older systems or those who favor familiar controls will find that the free Windows Media Player 9 fits like an old, sequined glove.

Party mode locks down your library while still allowing people to request songs. The interface is well designed, with clean, colorful icons throughout.

A well-organized interface displays all of the major features and settings. Four tabs across the top access the Audio CD Ripper, the Audio File Format Converter, Audio CD Creator, and MP3/WMA CD Creator. Ripping CDs is simple: Insert a disc and the Audio CD Ripper window displays info such as artist, track list, year, track length, and album length. The destination folder, the quality and format of output tracks, and even the filename format are all easily edited.
MP3 settings include the ability to choose constant, average, or variable bit rates. The Audio File Format Converter window features a drag-and-drop file selection topped by a conversion-format window. Nero 9 delivers a refurbished digital media suite that's still as comprehensive as they come, though now in a more polished wrapper. The installation file is massive and once Nero is on your machine, it consumes a hefty serving of memory. Considering all it can do, though, we can only complain so much.
CD- and DVD-burning are still Nero's core, while shortcuts for burning and ripping CDs and DVDs are now accessible from the new StartSmart GUI, now adorned with an RSS reader. Authoring and burning high-definition CDs and DVDs are added features, and so is the ability to export video files made and edited with Nero to YouTube, MySpace, and MyNero.
Nero 9 introduces RescueAgent, a tool to recover data from damaged disks, and a gaggle of Vista features, including a one-click desktop gadget for copying CDs.
Despite the cosmetic alterations, Vista support, and enhancements, particularly to Nero Vision, the dramatic changes are slim. However, Nero's significantly faster application launch time and improved usability make the audio, video, photo, data, and home entertainment workhorse that lets you edit MP3s, capture and edit video, record and playback TV, create slide shows, back up data, convert audio files, check your hardware specs, and design disc covers with ease well worth a try.

The options menu is extensive and will appeal to any advanced user, since it makes most manners of customization a cinch.

Highly versatile and especially proficient with boot discs, UltraISO Premium creates, edits, and burns disc images in several popular formats: ISO, BIN, Nero, Alcohol, CloneCD, and Xbox. It also converts images among formats. UltraISO supports data and audio/video discs and includes a simple MP3 encoder, but it really excels at creating bootable discs. It even can create a disc with a menu for booting several OSs.
The interface is well organized, though rather plain, and we wish its icons were more readable. Also on the negative side, the program can't mount CD images, which will diminish its value for some. However, if you need support for multiple image formats and want to design bootable discs, UltraISO makes a very good pick.
