FastStone Player 3.2

This free program delivers the basics for playing back audio and video files, but we wish it were both more flexible and more feature-rich. FastStone Player's main window turns out to be a mixed bag. On one hand, we appreciate its attractive, skinnable design and large viewing window for watching video files. However, we don't like its system for queueing up tracks or clips, as it can only play files within a folder you browse to. This means you can't simply create a playlist from different artists unless all your media is located in one folder. You can choose to play files at random within a folder, and you'll find an interesting tool for watching videos in slow motion. Still, we missed features such as an equalizer, visualizations, and the ability to play or rip CDs. FastStone Player might make a decent pick for greenhorns who don't want to be distracted by numerous features, but we don't think others will find much to get excited about.

AudibleManager is a simple way for users of Audible, an online audio bookstore, to organize their purchased books, podcasts, and other media. The program works just fine, although people who already use programs like iTunes to manage their Audible downloads will find that the AudibleManager doesn't offer anything particularly useful.

The program's interface is plain and intuitive, and it's quite easy to use. Users simply import media that they've downloaded from Audible and then use the program to transfer the files to a variety of portable devices. The program also functions as an audio player and CD burner, allowing users to listen to Audible content on their computers or burn the files to CDs. Overall, we thought that the program worked fine, but we didn't find any compelling reason that a user might want to switch from another media manager to this one. We've been using Audible with iTunes for years and don't have any complaints, and AudibleManager doesn't look like it would be much of an improvement. If the program allowed users to access Audible and make purchases from within the interface instead of using a browser window we might be more impressed, but that's not the case. The program doesn't have a Help file per se, but it does link to a list of Audible's FAQs.

AudibleManager is free. The program installs a desktop icon without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program with reservations; there's nothing functionally wrong with it, but it certainly doesn't offer any unique features.

Artisan DVD/DivX Player 3.70

This program has neither Hollywood glamour nor flash. With an awkward appearance and a lack of features, Artisan DVD/DivX Player takes all the magic out of movies and simply does its job passably.

While the program functions as a basic DVD player and can navigate chapters on a disc and manage subtitles and languages, it can't do much more. For example, the demo version can't bookmark video, and when we tried capturing a picture from video, we got an error message. Among other flaws, the clunky interface looks decidedly amateurish; the program doesn't include a help file, and the installer added a desktop shortcut to an unrelated Web site without asking permission.

Overall, if you're looking for a DVD player and you're short on cash, Artisan DVD/DivX Player may do the job. Even then, however, you might want to investigate other freeware options.

Greetings, Comrades! Free codecs for the people, thanks to the benevolent CCCP. Not the USSR but rather the Combined Community Codec Pack Project, a group dedicated to propagating Windows video codecs to achieve de facto standardization among competing anime formats, many of them developed and used by fan groups. Over time it's grown into a collection of useful codecs for playing just about any kind of video file you're likely to encounter online. The whole point of the CCCP is to provide a comprehensive set of codecs that will not only play common files but also uncommon ones.

It's recommended that you use the CCCP in conjunction with CCCP Insurgent, a separate piece of freeware that identifies any codecs currently installed on your computer so that you can disable them according to the instructional wiki on the Project's Web site. The CCCP is focused on decoding video files, not encoding them, so there are issues with some video production and editing software--for instance, it doesn't play well with some Nero components, and it asks to disable them when you install the pack. However, it's worth the work to see the unusual anime shorts and demos these fan groups produce. The download also includes the excellent 321 Media Player Classic, which works when Windows Media Player won't.

The CCCP Project maintains extensive instructions and documentation on installing, using, and troubleshooting the pack, including known conflicts and issues and how to resolve them. The codecs are ready for Windows 7.

APE is a file format that allows the compression of audio files without the loss of quality that comes with formats like MP3. Free Ape Player is an extremely basic media player that allows users to play both MP3 and APE files. It doesn't have much in the way of features, but if you need a simple way to play APE files, which can't always be handled by the average media player, it's a good choice.

The program's interface is quite basic, with the typical media player controls. The player's screen is split in two; on the left, a large numerical display shows the timestamp as the song plays, while on the right users can view the song's audio spectrum in three different styles. That's really the extent of what the program does. There's no Help file and no other features, and it doesn't appear that the program is even capable of playing more than one song at a time. There's no way to create playlists or, as far as we can tell, have the program play a directory of songs. The program is lightweight and easy to operate, and it does a fine job of playing both MP3s and APE files, but that's really all we can say for it. Users who require even basic non-essential features from an audio player will find that Free Ape Player is not going to meet their needs.

Free Ape Player is free. The program installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users who need a very basic way to play APE files.
